What happens when a mandate for accreditation is on the horizon or comes through?

Accreditation mandates come through from a number of sources
1) State and federal mandates to provide services, for example:
--Mental health providers in Alaska
--Child-placing agencies in North Carolina
--International adoption services providers
2) State and national associations may mandate accreditation for members, for example:
--California Alliance of Child and Family Services
--National Foundation for Credit Counseling

State mandates are increasingly being used as an indicator of quality by private health insurers, Medicaid, and managed care programs. While state mandates usually take years to be enacted, don't procrastinate! Accrediting bodies only have so much capacity; don't get caught in the wave seeking accreditation after a mandate!
