What’s Driving Interest in Accreditation?

We previously discussed five reasons behavioral health providers should consider accreditation. This week we’ll go one further with six reasons human service agencies should consider accreditation this year.

  • Accreditation provides an external validation of the quality of your programs and services, a “report card” for the public. This can improve community confidence in your agency and boost your reputation to help expand your referral base, recruit quality staff and attract and retain new foster families.
  • Accredited organizations find it easier to refer to, and develop partnerships with, other accredited organizations. So accreditation may help expand and evolve your service profile by improving your network.
  • Going through the accreditation process helps standardize policies and procedures across programs/services and throughout your locations. This gets your entire team on the same page. It also helps build staffing efficiencies and expand best practices across your agency. The result is a consistent framework that can be easily replicated to facilitate future growth.
  • Accreditation is also an exercise in reducing your risk profile. In addition to helping your agency reduce and/or better manage difficult situations and emergencies (helping your legal team sleep better at night!), it also gives you a chance to renegotiate your liability insurance, sometimes significantly.
  • The accreditation process helps agencies review and strengthen their policies and practices. This includes creating processes for gathering and using data for continuous improvement of the quality of the services you provide.
  • Legislation to require national accreditation of residential providers is on the slate in DC. The Family First Prevention Services Act requires qualified residential treatment programs to be licensed and accredited by one of the national accrediting bodies. This bill passed the House in June 2016, and is headed for the senate. Becoming accredited early positions you as a leader. You’ll also beat the rush and enjoy better timing.
